Larry and Clarinet
When I'm not painting, I'm playing clarinet in a band.
Here I am performing outdoors at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto.

Clearing Skies
JUly 23, 2013 7:45 pm
At the end of a super hot and humid day in Toronto, there was a sudden downpour for about 15 minutes. As quickly as it started, it ended and the skies began to clear letting through the bright sunshine.
The air smelled sweet and there was a significant lowering in temperature.

Crushed Garlic or Ballet Slippers
May 22, 2013
In preparation for a series of paintings I'm calling "Kitchen Series", I took pictures of a clove of garlic in various "poses". This one struck me in its elegance reminding me of a ballerina's shoes. There's a wonderful flow of line and subtlety in its structure.
For me, this raises the question of "What else is hidden within the food we consume?".

An Onion
In my view, an onion has never looked so beautiful!
Strong Winds
Strong Winds 1
April 28, 2011
Strongest winds I have ever encountered!
In addition to being enveloped by spray as waves struck against the boardwalk, I was buffeted by blasts of a west wind. At one point I found it necessary to grasp a tree to keep from being knocked into the harbour.

On The Red Carpet
On the Red Carpet
November 1, 2010
Here I am on the Red Carpet at the annual Toronto Art Show held at the Convention Centre.
Peppered with queries about the timing of my next show and its theme, I smiled and waved to the crowd.
It was great fun to be the target of flashing cameras.

Fall Tree 1
Fall Tree 1
A walk through Queens Park (the last week of October) in central Toronto yielded a splendid display of colour and texture.
Within a few hours a fierce roar of winds would blow in and most of the leaves would fall to the ground. But for that early afternoon, on a clear warm day, autumn seemed at its height.

What a difference a week makes
This photo and the one below were taken a few days apart at the end of September. This oak tree lives on University Avenue adjacent to the Court House in Toronto.
Effects of Solar Flare
NASA reported that an enormous solar flare was expected to have a noticeable effect on the atmosphere of the northern hemisphere. They predicted the appearance of increased northern lights on August 4, 2010. That night I shot this image from my north-west living room window. I was able to see a rippling light effect in the darkening sky.
Classic Tall Ship
The Tall Ships came to Toronto on the Canada Day / US Independence Day weekend (2010).
What a terrific opportunity to see first hand these majestic windjammers as they tacked against the wind at Harbourfront.
This is a picture of the Europa from the Netherlands.
Below are pictures of the USS Unicorn (a training ship for young women) as she leaves the harbour.
Finally what follows at the end is a wonderful atmospheric picture of the crowd watching the departure. Note the airplane taxing at the island airport (left of centre).

Gulls at Play
Gulls at Play
During the month of June it has been wonderfully warm and breezy at the lakeside. I have begun to really take notice of seagulls in flight. There is something magical about watching them easily wheel around and soar or at times hover against the wind on a sunny day. What follows are a few snaps taken within minutes of each other.
I think they would make terrific subject matter for a series of paintings.

The RINK is OPEN! Nov 22 09
I was out walking this morning along the water's edge at Harbourfront and heard a soft swishing sound and a burst of laughter. Here's the reason.
Digital Rembrandt ?
Sometimes I truly amaze myself with what one can do with a camera. I took the photo at the beginning of the Nov 14 09 still life painting session. Mel Delija had just finished setting up this beautiful arrangement. It has a wonderful Rembrandt-like quality.
